Sun Temple, Konark Orissa Information
Orissa is India's 10th largest state according to area and 11th in population. That is located on the eastern coast of India extended to an area of 155,707SqKm. Kissing the sunlit waters of the Bay of Bengal in the east and the heavily forested blue hued hills of the Eastern Ghats, the state's dazzling diamond - like reflection what the Travelmasti appetite with her elegance, refinement, grace, radiance, splendors and magnificence.

Climate of Orissa
The climate of Orissa falls under the category of tropical monsoon type of climate and in this, Orissa is not different from the rest of the country. Orissa receives a decent annual average rainfall of about 200 cm. June ushers in the south-west monsoon and it's in mid-October that the rains bid adieu to the state.

The rainfall has a key role to play in the climate of Orissa. Copious rainfall or absence of it directly affects the crop production in Orissa. Rainfall of about 140 cm is considered heavy and anything less than 120 cm is counted as low though it is helpful for paddy harvest.

History of Orissa
The history of Orissa is 2000 years old. It has no resemblance with the history of northern states of the country. Orissa was home to the Kalinga and Utkal tribes who played significant roles for the narration of this great history. As early as 1633, the British established a trade centre at Hariharpur, one of their first settlements in India.

Geographical View
Orissa can be divided into three broad regions

1) The Coastal plains,
2) The Mountain Region
3) The Plateaus

The Coastal plains
The Orissa Coastal Plains are the depositional landforms of recent origin and geologically belong to the Post-Tertiary Period. The 75 metre contourline delimits their western boundary and differentiates them from the Middle Mountainous Region. This region stretches from the West Bengal border, i.e. from the River Subarnarekha in the north to the River Rushikulya in the south.

The Mountain Region
This region mostly comprises the hills and mountains of the Eastern Ghats which rise abruptly and steeply in the east and slope gently to a dissected plateau in the west running from north-east (Mayurbhanj) to north-west (Malkangirig). This region is well marked by a number of interfluves or watersheds. The region covers about three-fourth of the entire State. Geologically it is a part of the Indian Peninsula which as a part of the ancient landmass of the Gondwanaland.

The Plateaus
The Plateaus are lower in elevation and they vary between 150 and 300 meters. These uplands are the product of revise action and are flat in nature. They are rich in soil nutrients and afford good opportunities for cultivation of paddy in wet areas.
